NEWS: Halki Hosts Circular Economy Actions under the CAROUSEL Project

The island of Halki will become a vibrant meeting point for circular economy, creativity and sustainable innovation this June through a series of activities organised within the framework of the European project CAROUSEL, implemented by INSULEUR.

From 2 to 17 June 2026, the Halki Innovation Park will host the Upcycling Pop-Up Shop, an interactive space dedicated to creative reuse, circular design and sustainable production. The initiative is part of the CAROUSEL Upcycling Hub, a collaborative space promoting the collection, redesign and transformation of underused or discarded materials into new products of higher value.

The Pop-Up Shop travels across the project’s pilot regions, fostering the exchange of good practices and encouraging collaboration between local communities, artists and circular economy stakeholders. In Halki, six Greek creators will present innovative products developed from recycled and upcycled materials, demonstrating how creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand.

A key highlight of the programme will be the “Pop Circularity Festival”, taking place on 9 and 10 June 2026. The festival will bring together citizens, visitors, artists and European project partners in an open and participatory celebration of circular economy principles and creative reuse.

During the two-day festival, participants will have the opportunity to discover:

  • circular economy initiatives from Halki and other European regions,
  • exhibitions of upcycled and circular products,
  • interactive workshops and participatory activities,
  • creative reuse demonstrations,
  • presentations of natural products and local craftsmanship.

One of the central activities of the festival will be the collective co-creation of a public bench made from reusable materials, involving artists, citizens, students and visitors in a hands-on circular design experience.

The programme will also welcome CAROUSEL partners and creators from Serbia, Italy and Slovenia, further strengthening transnational cooperation and knowledge exchange between island and local communities working towards more sustainable and circular economic models.

In addition, on 11 June 2026, a conference entitled “Development of Local Circular Economy Communities in Small Island Municipalities of Greece” will take place at the Halki Municipal Council Hall. This hybrid event will focus on the challenges and opportunities linked to circular economy development in small island territories and will encourage dialogue on policy approaches and local innovation.

Through these actions, Halki continues to position itself as a small island community investing in sustainability, collaboration and green innovation, while contributing actively to the broader European transition towards circular economy practices.

INSULEUR is proud to support and implement the CAROUSEL project together with its partners, contributing to the promotion of sustainable entrepreneurship, circular innovation and cooperation among island territories across Europe.

The CAROUSEL project is co-funded by the Interreg IPA ADRION Programme.
